Preface to the English Edition

Almost exactly two years have passed since the publication of the original Japanese edition of “Light Cleaning Revolution”. During that time, many people here in Japan have read the book, and also the whole field of photocatalysis has become extremely active, particularly in Japan. Many of our visitors from abroad, as well as the people who have heard the presentations that we have given abroad, have become interested in this field and have begged us to give them more information. Of course, some of our papers have been appearing recently in the international scientific literature, but nowhere is there a complete description of all of the aspects of this highly diverse field in English. Therefore, we decided to bring out an English translation of this small book in order to deliver this information to all types of readers, both technical and non-technical.
As you might imagine, however, in the intervening period of times since the original text was written, which is now almost three years, there has been a tremendous amount of progress made. Many of the technologies that are described have been developed to the stage of commercialization. There are now over a thousand companies involved with our efforts, including not only those in Japan but also those in Taiwan and South Korea. The number of different types of applications is truly amazing. This past December, we hosted a conference at the University of Tokyo on applications of photocatalysis in industry, and we had approximately seven hundred participants. For this book, therefore, we have tried to give a few of the highlights of the recent progress by including a series of new photographs. In the interest of publishing the first English edition in a timely manner, however, we have kept the text fairly close to the original. We are already at work on the second Japanese edition, and of course we hope to bring out a second one in English .
We very much appreciate the efforts of Mr. Bunichi Ohtsuka, who has carried out the difficult task of translating the book, and the efforts of Prof. Donald A. (Sandy) Tryk in editing. In addition, we would like to acknowledge the fine work of Mr. Y. Kitamura and Ms. N. Tamaki of BKC, Inc., Mr. M. Mase in putting together this English edition.
We very much hope that people around the world will begin to understand the multitude of possibilities that are now available with both the photocatalytic and superhydrophilic technologies.

Preface to the Original Japanese Edition

Scientific research is enjoyable. Of course, it seems difficult when progress is slow and there are no results of our efforts. Serious mistakes can be made through lack of consideration. However, the joy that comes from making a new, unexpected discovery cannot be compared with any other. It is like climbing along, steep mountain path: as you finally reach the top, the clouds part, and you are greatly moved by the spectacular landscape that appears before you. Furthermore, the suffering of not being able to explain the results of an experiment on the basis of past experience-and the joy of finally being able to solve the problem by coming up with a new idea-are just like mountain climbing.
This book describes some of our research on titanium dioxide photocatalysis. The three of us were able to write this book, hoping to climb an even higher mountain. It is mainly due to the efforts of Ms.Mitsuyo Hishinuma that we were able to finish this book in such a short time. We also very much appreciate the efforts of Mr. Masahide Mase of CMC Co., Ltd.
